Yolanda Iglesias (U Toronto), co-author David Navarro (Texas State U) y.iglesias@utoronto.ca

“I shall be happy if youth and inexperience do not lead him astray”: Youths & Wardship Relationships in the Tales of Count Lucanor
Eva Plesnik (U Toronto) eva.plesnik@mail.utoronto.ca
According to the Siete Partidas, pity was among the most important motivations as to why a man may have been inclined to raise a child which was not actually his. However, as Don Juan suggested in the Tales of Count Lucanor, the successful upbringing of a noble boy was a much more significant matter than a simple act of charity or kindness in fourteenth-century Spanish society. The strength of this relationship potentially had consequences in relation to the guardian’s own interests, as well as the stability of the kingdom as a whole. Through the lenses of the Siete Partidas as well as the Tales, this paper explores the tensions which were associated with the guardian’s responsibilities in raising his wards to be good Christians as well as adept statesmen, investigating how the child’s preparation for the competitive political sphere challenged his moral and spiritual development. Especially given the pressures which a youth confronted on his fourteenth birthday, neither his development into a good Christian nor his political allegiance to his guardian were guaranteed, making a boy’s coming-of-age, as a potential source of social instability, a great source of anxiety.
